Pepper had never heard Tony play like this before; music poured from the baby grand, augmented and embellished by what sounded like an orchestra forcing itself through Jarvis’ speakers. Tchaikovsky on speed.
When he’d wrung the last note out and silence fell, Pepper stepped forward to touch his shoulder. Tony’s eyes were dark with pain as he looked up at her, and on the music stand she saw an old, faded Advent calendar, half the doors torn off and fixed with yellowed tape. The date at the top was 1979.
“I miss them,” he said, and she could only nod.
