It was bright under there
Sep. 13th, 2005 04:18 pmOn occasion I dream about cities underwater. Not drowned cities, but cities built below the water on purpose. Science-fiction, rather than fantasy--these are high-tech, glowing with light, busy with life. Great neon-colored wheels on the sea bed, casting their luminescence up through the clear water so that they can be seen from the night air above. Cities without broken-down sections (not underwater! bad idea), without fear-filled streets. Cities full of warmth and purpose.
I'd like to write them, to bring them fully to focus; there's a story in there somewhere, possibly more than one, but I don't think the time is right yet. I only have one character who's anywhere near fully formed for them yet, and while I know what she will do, I don't know quite how she got there or why it is her doing it.
This may be the result of watching too much seaQuest DSV in my formative youth. Hard to say. I liked the dolphin, though, and the large guy. Besides, Diane Duane wrote the first book.
