When I was a wee thing, my paternal grandparents gave me a 45 of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Ole Oak Tree", with the flip side being "Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose".  Not exactly appropriate material for a five-year-old, but I had no idea what a burlesque show was and reportedly danced happily to the tunes.  We had a child's record player (and other records for kids), and I could play it on my own, with a little plastic disk to fit in the middle of the record so it would work with the turntable.

So the two songs have a certain resonance for me despite their ultimate cheesiness.  I believe I still have the record buried in my closet, though I haven't laid eyes on it in years and I don't have a turntable right now anyway.  But this week's CSI had me remembering the songs, which I usually only do once or twice a year.

And then I thought...iTunes.

I had no idea who the album artist was, besides male and recording in the 1970s, or possibly the late 1960s.  But I went to Wikipedia and looked up the original performers of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon", then checked iTunes.  Somewhat to my surprise, "Dawn featuring Tony Orlando" was available.  And the song sounded right, though I couldn't be absolutely positive.

Then I checked the Gypsy Rose song, and sure enough, the group had done that one too.  What are the odds that another group in the same time period had both songs, on the same album?  Well, probably higher than would first appear, but still.  So I got both.

I'm not dancing, but I enjoyed them both thoroughly.  Ribbons are kind of overdone these days, but it's still a sweet song in its way.

And technology amazes me.  From a 45 roughly as old as I am to being able to look up the origin and performer of a song without moving more than my fingers and eyes....to acquiring them almost instantaneously and being able to listen to them without requiring a turntable (though mp3s still need specialized equipment, to be sure).  It's astonishing.

Now the whole damn bus is cheering...and I can't believe I see...a hundred yellow ribbons 'round the ole oak tree.

Yes, anonymous protagonist, you are still loved, and forgiven.  And isn't that what we all yearn for, in our deepest hearts?
