Normally he avoided churches; too much guilt, too much time passed. But it was Gaudete Sunday, and for once David had something to rejoice in.

The interior of the little church was familiar; dim, quiet, smelling of incense and hot wax. It seemed empty, and he slipped into one of the side chapels, looking up to the patient, loving face above the flickering candles.

The coin slipped into the box with scarcely a clink. The wick flared to life, and he set it in its socket, and sighed, the precious image of Emily hovering before him.

“Thank you,” he whispered.
