He looked around warily, but no one was in sight. Approaching the table, he stared at the little building, its slightly crooked lines all but concealed under a heavy layer of decoration. It smelled enticingly sweet, and his mouth watered.
One more glance back--no one there. He snatched.
It crumbled in his grip, but he got most of it. The sudden shout of “Bruno!” made him bolt, his prize clutched in his jaws.
Behind him the Lady was laughing. “Gil, the dog just grabbed your gingerbread lab!”
He hid behind the sofa to savor his prize. Gingerbread was good.
