Ed woke suddenly, realizing that the cries he’d been hearing were silenced, even though Gracie was still asleep by his side. Frowning, he rose, absently raking his hair out of his eyes.
The small crib was empty, and Ed fought a small surge of panic, but the light gleaming from below had him quietly descending the stairs.
Joey, sitting next to the Christmas tree, didn’t notice him. “…Lots of chocolate,” he was saying to the bundle in his arms. “And then presents after church. You’ll love it…”
Ed grinned and retreated, leaving Joseph and his baby sister to their conversation.
