Jan. 11th, 2007 10:44 pmOkay, according to last season IIRC, Grissom speaks Korean, at least some. He speaks bad Spanish, we've seen that, but he could have just picked that up at many points in his life. Korean is a little bit more esoteric for a white boy born in the Fifties.
I want to know where he learned it, and why. I can see him doing it for the heck of it--the man collects knowledge as a spinal reflex--but still, it doesn't seem to me to be something one would do accidentally. Did he have a correspondence with a Korean entomologist? Had a Korean girlfriend? Just liked the sound of it?

I think he learned it in Las Vegas...just after he moved there, he was exploring a public garden area and was captivated by some sort of bug that's not usually indiginous tot he area. He's startled by a voice that expresses the wonder he was feeling at the discovery. An older Korean woman is there. She tells him there is a legend about the insect they are admiring...she gives part in Korean (the names) and gives a translation and meanings, saying English is sometimes limited in its descriptiveness. Grissom agrees and they talk, going for tea...she's a retired entomologist who has been writing children's stories to help children of Korean heritage keep in touch with their culture. Over the course of time a friendship develops and Grissom finds himself learning the language...
What?! Just a thought/theory...
OH CRAP! I have to be at the bus in 4 minutes and I'm not even dressed!!

Date: 2007-01-13 02:49 am (UTC)In the S6 episode, "Room Service", Brass is talking to the manager of the laundry and asks him if he speaks Lao. The manager says he pulled a stint in SE Asia right out of high school and Brass said he knew how he felt. That makes me believe he was in either Vietnam or maybe Cambodia as a Marine. There was supposed to have been a more definitive reference to his military time as well as his rank in “Happenstance” but it got cut.
Okay, so no M*A*S*H for Grissom. Maybe his dad served in Korea? Not nearly as entertaining as a Korean stripper name Kim Chee (wonder if she'd have a nasty body odor) but possible.

Date: 2007-01-13 05:00 pm (UTC)You mean juggling something other than life? I once shared an office with a guy who could juggle. He said he picked it up in the service because it was something to do while he was bored. I guess I could see Brass learning in similar circumstances.

Date: 2007-01-16 04:50 am (UTC)Yes, I was a regular viewer for about the first three seasons. I tuned in because I always liked Patrick Bauchau (Sydney) and got hooked. I can't remember why I stopped watching.
I can't get over Terri Miller because of that show...
Wow, I never made the connection between her character and Teri Miller but now that you mention it...
