The little man pushed back his hat to see the North Star right overhead; his breath plumed. “How many more days, Nik?” he asked.
His friend, scarcely larger but much rounder, chuckled into his beard. “Fifteen.”
The Doctor gave him a puckish look. “Don’t you ever get tired of it?”
“No more than you weary of saving the universe. To each their work, Thete.”
The Doctor snickered. “Truer words were never poked in the pig, cousin.”
The red-robed man smiled, and they walked through the snow to the bright-lit workshop. The door closed, and it faded easily away.
