Her list wasn’t long, but it was precise. Arri waited in the line patiently, holding the paper tightly even though she’d memorized it. Ahead of her kids shifted and parents murmured, and sometimes babies cried.
Arri wasn’t scared. When it was her turn, she hopped up onto Santa’s wide lap, and told him what she wanted for Christmas.
He didn’t laugh at her this year, or tell her that she really wanted a doll. “Legos, hmm?” His smile was kind. “Have you been good?”
She nodded solemnly, and Santa winked. “Dream hard, and you’ll get your wish.”
Arri never forgot.
