I admit that I watched Cheri simply because it stars Michelle Pfeiffer.  And Colette has never been on my radar; I prefer literature of a decade or two later.

I have no quarrel with the acting, and I could almost watch it again for the buildings and the clothing--gorgeous, gorgeous Art Nouveau stuff.  But the whole thing was--off.

It billed and framed itself as a romantic comedy of sorts, and the narration at the beginning certainly set up that feeling.  All the characters were a little over the top, exaggerated just a trifle.  The emotions were real, but the whole thing was lighthearted.

And then the last voiceover was brutal.  I cared not at all for the title character--a spoiled little twit who wanted to have his cake and eat it too--but the payoff was completely out of place with the whole tone of the movie.
