Heheh. "Don't mess with Pepper." May be rule number one in the Stark Universe as it stands. And that applies on multiple levels...him to the world and her to him specifically...
(Yes I know. I'm very sad, but I am totally all over the protective-Tony thing. Because it's hilarious to watch the guy who presumably doesn't care about anything go INSANE every time she's threatened personally.)
ITA with rule #1. Besides, anyone who can lead SHIELD into the building, blow up an arc reactor and, in the process, manage to cut power to the greater LA area has my devotion. Heheh.
So much for being a guy with "nothing." Protective!Tony is great. Even paralyzed and you could still hear him thinking "oh fuuuuuuck" when he realized she was in danger. IMO, one of the coolest shots in the movie was Stane pulling his cannon on Pepper and Tony coming barrelling in from above. Not to mention the whole implant/giving her a suit thing in IIM. Dude's got it bad. Real bad. *smirk*
I don't think it was ever so much a matter of Tony not having anyone as not seeing what was directly in front of him. :-) All that said, Tony has always been a bit Pepper obsessed in cannon, from the moment he started actually noticing her not as a convenience, but a person. Whether it was a romantic or family based concern never really mattered - he treats every threat to her safety as a direct threat to his own.
Word, by the way on IIM. The show thus far is a pure shippers DREAM. I mean no they're not bumping uglies, but the sheer level of ADORATION involved...
Yeah, that's a better way of expressing it. Could Tony be any more self absorbed? For a woman who’s so utterly integral to his well-being, she gets the short straw an awful lot of the time – at least until he truly notices her. And yet, throw Pepper into danger and it cuts right through that character flaw and he’ll move heaven and hell to protect her. No matter what, they are family.
I think one of the most interesting developments in Tony’s character is (will be in the case of the movie – I hope) watching that transition from selfish asshole to a guy capable of putting someone else’s needs before his own – something that has to happen in order for them to stand a chance of transforming their dysfunctional relationship into something healthy…
Oh and they can’t adore each other that much and not ‘bump uglies’ eventually. The writers don’t hate us that much, do they? Heheh.
Oh I don't doubt that they'll end up in bed together eventually...but in truth the fact that they don't do so easily is a source of relief in a lot of ways. Tony's respect for Pepper is actually illustrated by the fact he's never done more than flirt with her shamelessly...
It's never been up for question in his mind, I assume, that this is not his usual game, though. Them being lovers would be different than any of his one night stands or even some of the longer term relationships he's been in. If they ever make the transition to lovers...I honestly think that's be it for him emotionally, and he's smart enough to not to try and pretend otherwise.
That being the case, he may get frustrated, but he'll still wait until they're both truly ready.
I dunno--seems to me that the writers would be compelled to eventually break them up if they did get together, for the sheer drama if nothing else. In my limited experience with both media, comic books are pretty soap-operish.
True enough - though I think they could drag out the slow climb to couplehood and beyond for a dang long time first...
And even if they did split, I suspect it'd lead to another slow haul back toward one another. I could even handle it if they did so for well told, believable reasons, but then I probably am hoping for too much.
Well the movie arc definitely has a set block of time in which to finish telling their story. The comic is anyone's guess what'll happen. So between the two, I'd put odds on favourite on the movies giving us the shipper ending (and even that might not be likely) rather than the comic... which will in true soap opera fashion drag it out... and out... and out... and then Pepper's evil twin will come back from the dead, pregnant with Tony's sprog and... ;P
That Tony knows, on whatever level, that she’s out of bounds unless they both go into the relationship when they’re ready is a really interesting counterpoint to how he treats the rest of the women he sleeps with – because yes, it a relief that he doesn’t take a relationship Pepper lightly. She’s his best friend – and I think they both know that once that line is crossed, they can’t go back to the way things were before. Even right now, emotionally she’s his touchstone and no one else even comes close… which is one of the reasons he’s so protective of her.
Neither of them are ready right now and it would be infinitely worse if they weren’t ready and had sex anyway. It would really wreck everything. Hell, I’m pretty sure Pepper would leave. *facepalm*
Leave or try and pretend nothing happened and try and go back to what she thinks passes for their 'normal.' Chickie-Bird is a wee bit passive agressive, after all, and it's already established her more retreative emotional habits drive Tony a little nuts...
Very true. Although even Pepper must have a breaking point somewhere and I wonder what it would take to flat out throw her over the edge. Because she strikes me as the sort that will retreat, retreat, retreat until all hell breaks loose and then it simply isn't pretty. O_o
Didn't she royally bitch him out and leave at one point somewhere way back in the comic canon? I'm pretty sure I remember something like that...
Would it be considered a bad thing if I mentioned I'd really love to see that? Blast helmet requirements notwithstanding? Heh. She's so self contained and it would just be amazing to see her really and truly let Tony have it. We really only got a tip of the iceburg with the toss of the flash drive back at him and the "You'll DIE!!!!" moment.
I'm all over the drama, drama, drama. Plus the bigger the fight, the better the make up sex. Pretty sure at any rate. ;)
I have to agree I'd love to see Mount Pottsuvious errupt, and not just as a prelude to released emotional or sexual tension. As sick as it is, Tony probably would ENJOY the way Pepper plays when the gloves come off.
:-)
"I should not be getting turned on right now. But I am. This may be like suicidally HOT."
Oh Tony would ABSOLUTELY enjoy it. They'd beat the shit out of each other trying to gain the upper hand, but even Pepper would enjoy it too once past the blinding rage - or maybe even during the blinding rage. They're both sick puppies. Heh. You don't have that much repressed emotion without release and then... wow. Release!! *snerk*
"Emphasis on suicidal. Not shocking though given your blatant disregard for bullet holes. Better keep it in your pants Rocket Boy if you value your manhood at. all. I've barely even warmed up the engine here..."
mutters: "Friction burn, this!" Rude gesture... "You are vile. Absolutely vile, Tony. And your juvenile fantasies are of absolutely zero interest to me. In fact, this is one of those days when I can't quite believe that I've squandered nearly nine years of my life cleaning up after YOUR messes."
This was a pretty impressive hijacking. Heh. And sure. Although let me get home from the office first. Funny, I got a tad distracted this afternoon and haven't managed to leave yet. :P
