“After you.” Rhodey held the door, and Pepper slipped past him into the church. Midnight was fast approaching, and they hurried to find seats in the long pews.
It was an annual tradition, seeing Tony off to a party and then going together to Christmas Eve service. This year, Iron Man was fighting terrorists, and the worry was commensurate, but they still took time to worship.
The service was half-over when a battered figure slipped quietly in next to Pepper and took her hand. Tony’s grin was bruised but wide, and Rhodey sighed relief.
Pepper’s prayer was all thanksgiving.
