My boss had me, as usual, help set up the more-or-less-monthly birthday lunch at work--book the meeting room and collect the money for the subs/chips/drinks/cake. There are several birthdays this month, including one person who is, I believe, turning 50 this year, so in his case they were trying to make it a surprise. The usual format for the celebrants is that they don't pay for lunch and a card is passed around beforehand for signatures.
Well and good. I was expecting a card myself, no biggie, since my boss keeps an eye on such things. And Dr. L was surprised when he came in, certainly. They brought out a bunch of helium balloons for him, even. And then threw me for an utter loop by giving me a bunch too. *laughter* Because it was a decade-birthday for me as well. They'd even had our names put on the cake.
There was much amusement at how they'd managed to slip that part past me, especially since they'd brought the balloons in right past me, shrouded in plastic bags--I knew what they were, of course, I just didn't know that one bunch was for me.
It was really nice of them. *grin*
