Well, my laptop does seem to be out of commission--a day's rest yielded the same result--but I fixed up a solution for my car that lets me open the trunk and pull a wire to unlock my back door.  I was overthinking the problem--all I had to do was unlock one of the rear doors.  I tried to do the same for the front door handle, but I think it has metal in it as I couldn't get the drill bit all the way through.  (Bless my parents for giving me a rechargeable drill for Christmas!)  Still, I'm considering solutions for the broken part of the outer handle.  With luck and a sturdy key, I can actually open it from the outside, after a lot of prying, but I'm not sure how long the plastic will hold up so I don't depend it. 

But that does nothing for my laptop, sigh.

Wow. It seems like this has been a really crappy month for you. I'm so sorry about your laptop. Computers are an addiction. We get so dependent on them and then they let us down. I'm glad that you can get into car. I hope that things look up for you soon. I love reading your journal and stories. eagertalker (anne ruhland)

Thanks! At least I still have access at work; that's something. And the car still works--could be much worse. But I agree. Now if I can just keep my air conditioning working...
