I thought about doing another Advent of ficlets, but I've kind of run out of fandoms, and enthusiasm for this sort of waned last year.  So, due in part to [personal profile] jeanniemac's musings on Advent, I decided to attempt twenty-four days of my favorite holiday songs (I only have 1672 of them!), possibly with attached, vaguely related rambles.

Without further ado, then, click to open the door...

Merry Christmas Wherever You Are, Judy Collins, A Gift of Christmas: A Superstar Celebration of Caring.  Please right-click and save if you want to listen.

The only experience I have of Judy Collins is seeing her guest-star on the TV series Christy some years ago; I know she's famous, but she's not on my radar.  However, this song delights me.  I think I first heard it on a Christmas-song cassette tape when I was still living with my parents; we used to have quite a few, some of them Hallmark, some from other places (we had one from, I think, Exxon.  Don't ask me, esp. since my parents preferred Amoco).  In 2007 I went looking for this song.

But it's not available on iTunes.  It took some hunting, but I finally tracked it down on the above CD--but as far as I can tell, that's pretty much the only place one can get it these days, at least easily.  Still, I was very pleased to get it.

Merry Christmas wherever you are/all men are brothers under one star

I know, I know, it's Christian-centric, etc., but I do love the idea of Christmas bringing people together across differing ideologies and points of view (see the 1914 Christmas truce).  It is, of course, an attitude that should be practiced year-round, but sometimes we need a reminder.

And Jesus was sent as a reconciler, too, both between humanity and God and between Jews and Gentiles.  He drew together disparate groups with one truth, that God was available to all through Him.  So it makes a certain sense that way as well.
