I haven't watched the (relatively) new Sherlock, in part because I find the idea of an out-of-period remake irritating (why??  What on earth moves people to do that?).  So I don't know much about it.

But I looked it up tonight and am absolutely boggled that fandom has exploded over a show that's only had six episodes.  Are they double-length or some such?  Even Firefly took fourteen.

They're each 90 minutes.

I haven't watched it, although I can get it streaming from Netflix, mainly because I'm kinda not fond of temporal AU-ness generally (this is why I'm not attracted to, say, Trek fic set in the Civil War era or what have you). I also, sorry folks! don't see why everyone is ga-ga over Benedict Cumberbatch. He must be a good actor (see also War Horse and, oh yeah, that upcoming Star Trek movie) and he seems a decent chap, but otherwise, meh.

There is a charming, very Brettish interview with him and Tom Hiddleston at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAkLfrlVmCQ

Well, it happened with Inception...

Yes, each episode is 90 minutes actually. :-) I'm not in the fandom, but I do enjoy the show.

Ah, okay, that makes more sense.

I was very curious how they'd do this, and really enjoyed the first 3 episodes (90 min each). I won't be able to see the next 3 until May. :(

The fandom is alternately amusing and scary - and while not steeped in it, I have written a bit. One story has over 1,780 hits on AO3. Go figure. :D

I admit to temptation because it is supposed to be so good, but I'm still offended by the rechronization.

Nice!! Is AO3 any better than the Pit of Voles?

I'm not into the fandom...reading the fanfiction. However, I love the series. The modern twist is exceptional. I love the way it reflects Sherlock's thinking process. He fits in beautifully with texting.

And the modern twist on storylines is great. Hounds of the Baskerville - ingenious!

For fanfic writers, I can see this is fertile ground, especially for slashers. And the running joke on the Deerstalker cap, hilarious.

I can't wait for the third season!

Well, sure, it's always been open to slashers. Though for me that's more of an off-putting point.

Quite frankly I never saw the slash element in the stories or movies. But in the current show there are innuendos and jokes. Leaving the relationship open to interpretation. I don't think they will actually make that leap in the story-line, I would be surprised.

However, I don't think it is enough in the story to be a deterrent to enjoy the show.

I know this may be sacrilege to say, but I hated the Downey movie. Walked out on the first. Not sure if I'll attempt to see the second. I guess each person has their own vision of Sherlock and Watson.

I enjoy the Downey films but I don't think they're all that great--I watch them more for amusement purposes (and Lestrade) than anything else. If you didn't like the first, don't bother with the second!

I was wary of it for much the same reason-it was hard for me to reconcile the Sherlock Holmes I grew up reading with a modern day setting. But I gave it a shot because season 1 was on netflix streaming, and was just instantly drawn in. I downloaded and watched season 2, and am eagerly awaiting the third. I have also been devouring fic like it's food and I'm starving.

Heh, it's good to find a new fandom! Is the fic any good?

A lot of it is, actually! Not to sound surprised, but we all know that usually, the majority of fic for any given fandom will be...difficult. I'd say a solid 90% of what I've seen is grammatically well-written with good characterization.
And since you aren't so much for the slash, there's stuff for you still, even though that's a big thing in this fandom. Many of the stories I've read feature an asexual Sherlock. It goes from there to being AsexualSherlock/Straight John or AsexualSherlock/GayJohn. But a good portion of it is just two men, who while not sexually attracted to each other, have a great deal of love for each other.
An Archive of Our Own seems to have the best fic along those lines~and you can search many different permutations, so you can find exactly what you're looking for.

Well, from what I recall of the original stories, Sherlock was uninterested in sexual matters completely--or romantic ones, at least Victorian-wise. So having him asexual is really basically canon. Not that I object to other interpretations, and I'm a huge fan of the Mary Russell series. What else is fic for, etc.

Thanks for the rec, but I doubt I'll read unless I watch first.
