My dreams have certain patterns and habits, like crowds of people I don't know who are generally irrelevant to the plot of the dream, such as it is.  But one of the more interesting aspects, to me, is the occasional tendency to dream about hidden passages in houses, and my desire to get into them.

Last night it was a full-blown room, but usually I dream secret narrow spaces behind walls that enable me to climb from one floor to another--dusty, dark, full of protrusions, but big enough for me to squeeze through.  I'm generally far more athletic in my dreams than I ever am in waking life, and have no hesitation in scrambling up or down in between a house's inner wall and its outer.  I don't know why the fascination--is it the idea of knowing a secret?  The assurance of having an escape route or hiding place?

I love reading about hidden rooms and passages, too.  When I read Locked Rooms for the first time, I was slightly disappointed when nothing physical besides a hidden pantry emerged.  In reality I've never encountered anything more exciting than a semi-hidden servants' staircase in a big old house, and that was a long time ago.

I'm sure Freud would have something to say about this tendency.  I definitely wouldn't want to hear it, though.

Maybe my post about our secret room inspired your dream?

Could be! I know where some of this stuff comes from--L&O:CI is pretty obvious when it happens--but not always.
