He didn’t know what Christmas was. Nobody had ever taught him about it, and Tanks sure didn’t have holidays.
December meant cold, and shorter days, and finding shelter from the wind and rain. But Cooper couldn’t miss the lights appearing in windows, or the bright colors. Something was coming, even if he couldn’t count the days until it arrived.
The soup kitchen did hold a special dinner one night, though. Cooper walked out with a full stomach for the first time in months, and the striped candy they’d given him tasted cool and sweet.
He wondered how often Christmas came.
