The little boy poked restlessly at the packages beneath the Christmas tree. His mother frowned fondly at him. “Sweetie, leave them alone. They aren’t even yours; Santa hasn’t come yet, you know.”
“I know.” He stuck his hands in his diminutive pockets, just like his father. “I’m just inkquizative.”
She laughed. At eight he was trying to fit an outsized vocabulary into a child’s worldview. “No unwrapping them to peek. Christmas will be here soon enough.”
Maria had to admit, two nights later, that the crude scanning device Anthony wheeled out in secret after midnight didn’t actually break the rule.
