I apologize in advance; having read the original book, I know what a parody the musical is, not to mention the emotional abuse aspects. But it's still awfully compelling...and maybe this will let me ignore the post-film fic the muse made me start. >_<

For all his solitary ways, he had always known the great hum of activity above, the huge hall never silent even in the dead of night. Now it was empty, a blackened, snowy ruin.
Erik wrapped his face close and slipped out, restless, aimless. Without L’Opera, without Christine, he had nothing. No goal... no fire to warm his chilly heart.
The bells were noisy overhead, and there were candles in the windows, though he didn’t know why. And when a passing stranger smiled and wished him the best of the season, he felt his tight-drawn soul start to ease.
