I have committed filk again
May. 8th, 2014 09:46 pmOkay. I am not going to explain why I occasionally listen to David Ball's "Riding With Private Malone"; suffice it to say that country is not usually my thing. But this last time the muse woke with a start and fastened on the "she" part of the song, and wondered what the car thought of the whole thing.
Thus:
He was just out of the service, I could sense it on my skin
A voice, a step, a soldier’s stride as he walked slowly in
It brought back memories I thought I’d lost as I had slept
And if I could, I’d have hid myself and wept
I was way back in the corner of an old ramshackle barn
Thirty years of dust and dirt on my green army tarp
He pulled away my cover and he sucked in a deep breath
At the sight of me--a ’66 Corvette
It only took him moments the lady’s price to meet
And he was slow and careful when he slid into the seat
He found the note I carried and soon he had it read
The date was 1966 and this is what it said:
It said “My name is Private Andrew Malone
And if you’re reading this then I didn’t make it home
But for every dream that’s shattered, another one comes true
This car was once a dream of mine, now it belongs to you
And though you may take her and make her your own
You’ll always be riding with Private Malone”
It didn’t take him long before he had me running well
As polished as a diamond and as sound as any bell
But for all the care he took of me, my heart he never won
My soldier boy had carried it away when he had gone
As we drove on through the nights I’d turn the music on
And remember how my soldier boy had loved to hum along
Sometimes it seemed my memories would bring him back awhile
To ride along in silence and enjoy every mile
He was a young man named Private Andrew Malone
Who fought for his country and never made it home
And though our dream was shattered, forever I’ll be true
As faithful to my soldier boy as the time that I was new
And though the new owner had made me his own
I’ll always belong to my Private Malone
One night it was raining hard, we took the curve too fast
And as the flames arose I knew my time had come at last
My soldier boy was there in time to pull my driver free
But as I burned I knew for sure--he had come for me
It was a young man named Private Andrew Malone
Who fought for his country and never made it home
But for every dream that’s shattered, another one comes true
I was the perfect dream of his back when I was new
And as the flames consumed me I knew I’d won my own
Now I’d never be parted from Private Malone
