I don't know if Youtube has a video of it or not, but if you listen to the composer and his wife(?) singing it to each other, it's clearly meant to be teasing. The song doesn't translate too well in modern times when date rape is a problem, but it's not the original context of the song. It's sort of like people who claim the Bible promotes child abuse because of the line "suffer the children."
Have you ever seen the Futurama Christmas episode? Santa is a robot who really does know if you've been naughty or nice? Nothing like Santa as a stalker and let's face it - everyone is naughty at some point. He goes on a rampage every Christmas because no one meets his programmed definition of nice.
Oh, sure, as my mom says, it's supposed to be seductive. Autre temps, autre mores, etc. But the lyrics annoy me enough these days that I don't really get any enjoyment out of the song.
Heh, sounds like an interesting story! I have never seen an ep of Futurama though.
I never really liked the song, but I doesn't bother me. Although the removal of the cigarette line sort of amuses me. Of all the things that people dislike about that song, and that's what they change? :-D
I know people who swore Futurama was the best show ever made, and I found it mildly amusing at times at best. Just because something is different doesn't necessarily mean it's good. But it was the first time that I thought about Santa spying on people worldwide to know who was naughty and nice.
LOL Funny you should mention that. I was listening to this on the bus the other day (ipod is my friend) and, in a half-asleep kind of way, thought it sounded kind of like something highly questionable was going on.
You know, I'd like to hear a rendition of this with the voices reversed...the guy saying he had to go and the gal cajoling him to stay. I wonder how the lyrics would be perceived... *inquisitive head tilt*
heh, didn't I mention this song with Cuddy and Wilson singing it and then reversing roles mid-way? I'm sure I shared that plot bunny with you!
And yes it's slightly creepy, but I take it within its timeframe when perceptions of seduction and dating were not quite as politically correct as they are now. I've heard a few versions where the girl's comments make it clear that she is not as reluctant as her words imply, and that they both know it's a forgone conclusion that she's going to stay.
