Lack of Chemistry
Mar. 8th, 2010 10:02 amI like Castle, I really do. It’s a hoot. The characters are flawed and fun, the plots are obvious but entertaining, and I adore the ME. I do not, however, really ship Beckett/Castle. Heresy, I know, but while I can see that he’s attracted to her--no surprise, he’s attracted to practically anything with two X chromosomes--I get none of the same vibe from her.
Can’t blame her, either. He’s an irritating twit who can’t take no for an answer and who put her in an impossible position with her somewhat irresponsible boss, and he sexually harasses her on a regular basis. I don’t think she minds too much, and she’s clearly flattered by being picked as a muse by one of her favorite authors whether she’ll admit it or not, but really, why would anybody consider a serious relationship with the man? He’s a pain in the ass.

As a tie-in novel, Heat Wave (the Castle spin-off) is surprisingly good, with strong characterizations and a nice complicated mystery. There’s plenty of wit and twists, and while it’s short enough to make the cover price a bit outrageous, it’s fun and a very decent read.
As what it’s pretending to be, however, it fails utterly. The characters that are supposed to be inspired by the police folks are basically copies with the names changed. And the author offers almost no physical description of them at all. Nikki Heat is supposed to be young and sexy, but there’s nothing to tell the reader that. It’s a glaring omission for what’s supposed to be a debut novel.
It’s still fun and full of inside jokes, though, and I recommend it--though you might want to check your library rather than paying the full price.
